Earliest photographs of Zalene found to date, childhood, teenage years & young adulthood (circa 1917-1935). |
These two photos, one of "me and my dear Dady" are the earliest we have of Zalene. They were found in her wallet after her death. |
1101 Taylor Street, Durham, NC is the address of Zalene's home place, or "Home Sweet Home" as her handwritten caption on this photo says (Left). This home was built by the textile mill for which both her parents, Wade and Ida Lloyd, worked full-time. They lived in this company-provided home (which they later purchased) until they both died. The home was evidently renovated as its appearance has changed in this photo taken July 23, 1961. |

Zalene and her mother, Ida Lloyd, walk their youngest sister/daugher, Yvonne ("Vonnie") in downtown Durham, NC. This photo postcard was likely taken by a "souvenir" vendor on the streets of Durham. |

Early photo of sister, Rebecca Yvonne Llloyd. |

This"Class Prophesy" from Zalene's College yearbook (LUMEN) is built upon an invitation to the Class of '48 to Zalene's homecoming from India after 10 years of missionary service. |
Ethel Whaley, fellow senior & married student, poses with Zalene Lloyd in this 1948 photograph. Five years later, Ethel and her husband, Lee, would introduce Zalene to a young sailor named Bob at a church party in Jacksonville, NC. Their meeting would survive 51 years. |
Zalene took this photo of the dining table at her home in Durham where her family had planned a special send-off party on August 1, 1948. Seven days later on August 8, 1948, she would board the S.S. Bali in New York Harbor and embark on a 30-day voyage to India. She would be away from home for 5 years. |
