One of my enduring memories of Mom involves
ping-pong! When we lived in Columbia, North
Carolina, we had a ping-pong table out under
the carport, just off the kitchen.
During warm weather, Mom and I would strike
up a game after school or during a warm
summer day. (It is important to note that she
was 4'11'' and I was 6'3''.)
Evidently, her strategy was to defeat me by
means other than superior table-tennis skills.
Because of her size, she had to jump around
much more than I. These quick movements of
hers were so comical to me that I would begin to
laugh, which she used to her advantage.
Pretty soon, I was laughing so hard I couldn't pay
attention. At that point, she would usually slam
the ball over the net and, due to my
incapacitation, I would be unable to return the
volley.
Mom would score again!
It's probably important to mention that when we
were holding these matches, I was 17 and she
was 57!!
